Glide wax, compared

Glide wax fills the microscopic structure of a base so that water cannot hold it back, and the number that decides which wax to buy is printed on the packet: the temperature band. Two of the six waxes here print one — a race red for −4 °C to +4 °C, a base wax for 0 °C to −20 °C — and the other four are sold as universal, covering the middle of the range at the cost of the ends. Snow temperature, not air temperature, is what the band refers to, and a wax used far outside it either drags or wears off in an hour. The application splits the shelf in two. A hot wax is ironed in, scraped and brushed: it lasts several days of skiing and takes twenty minutes and a workbench. A liquid or spray wax wipes on in two minutes and lasts a day or less — the corpus shows 250 ml sprays and rub-on blocks at the same price as a 120 g bar. Neither is a lesser product; they answer different questions. The formulation is the third thing, and it has changed: fluorinated waxes are restricted in competition and withdrawn from much of the market, and what is on this shelf now is hydrocarbon and fluor-free.
