Scrapers and base brushes, compared

These are the two tools that come after the iron, and skipping them wastes the wax entirely: unscraped wax is a layer of drag, and unbrushed wax hides the structure it was supposed to fill. The scraper is a plate of acrylic and its thickness is the specification — the corpus shows 3, 4 and 5 mm, and 5 mm is what holds an edge instead of flexing away from the base. A thin scraper bends over a wide snowboard and leaves a wave of wax down the middle. The edge has to be square and it dulls: a scraper is sharpened on sandpaper or a purpose-made jig, and the acrylic ones are sold in packs of two, three and four because they are consumable. The brushes do three different jobs with three materials, and buying one is buying a third of the tool. Copper or bronze opens a dirty base and strips oxidised wax; nylon is the workhorse that clears the bulk of the scraped wax out of the structure; horsehair polishes at the end. The corpus shows sets of three sold on exactly that logic, and a single nylon brush at a quarter of the price. The size matters more on a snowboard than on a ski, and a brush with a strap is a brush that can be pushed hard. Prices run from 9 € for a plexi scraper to 121 € for a set of rotary brushes.
