That is what the standard is for, written in a way a buyer can use.

Walking. A flat alpine sole is hard plastic and skates on packed snow; a GripWalk sole is rockered and rubberised. The catch is compatibility — not every binding accepts it, and the standards page on this site sets out the convention.
